The empress glow

Crushed pearl was part of the beauty rituals of Chinese empresses for centuries, prized for its soft, moonlit glow. Ours is saltwater pearl, folded into cacao butter and botanical oils.

Wear it alone for a soft tint, or under makeup as a primer. At night, BioLume 2.0 carries the ritual on.

Pearl

Crushed saltwater pearl

Pearl has been ground into powder and used on skin in Chinese medicine for roughly three thousand years. It's valued as a cooling, clarifying mineral, and it gives skin a soft, lit-from-within glow.

We use seawater pearl, not the freshwater pearl most powders are made from. Saltwater oysters grow only one to three pearls at a time, slowly, in protected lagoons. Ours is levigated, a fine wet-milling method, into an ultra-fine powder that melts invisibly into Crushed Pearl Butter. 100% pearl, no fillers.

DMSO

Dimethyl sulfoxide

DMSO is a sulphur compound drawn from trees, and it moves through skin with remarkable ease, carrying the botanicals around it deeper. It's what makes BioLume so much more than a face oil.

So why haven't you heard of it? DMSO is plant-derived, inexpensive and can't be patented, so the big beauty houses have had little reason to build around it. Researchers have been studying it since the 1960s. It deserves a place in your ritual.

Used in considered amounts, in night formulas.

Provenance

Organic oils, sourced in New Zealand

Jojoba, moringa, sea buckthorn, pomegranate and prickly pear oils, certified organic where available. Carrot root oil, cold-pressed from the root. Frankincense, jasmine and helichrysum for scent and character.

Every formula is water-free, so each batch is small, fresh and dated by hand.

Morning. Evening. Body.

The routine is short on purpose. Clean skin takes in more, so the order matters more than the number of steps.

About Lauren

Handmade in Mangawhai Heads

I didn't want to chase ageless skin with injections. I wanted to support my skin through ageing, and what was on the shelf didn't do that for me.

Years of private practice with plants, oils and lesser-known compounds, through Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic frameworks, became this range. I formulate and make every batch myself. If an ingredient is only there to fill space, it doesn't go in.

Lauren

In their words

From people using the range.

For the skin you're in

A bridge to ageing gracefully.

Maybe you've spent years with injectables and aren't sure how to step away. Maybe you simply want to look after the skin you're in, and you're tired of wellness labels that promise everything. Either way, you want to know what you invest in truly works.

BioLume was made for that. Each night, DMSO carries bakuchiol, vitamin C and organic botanical oils beyond the surface, giving your skin steady support as it finds its own way.

Begin once your last treatment has fully settled. Not for use over areas with recent injectables.

Questions

Before you begin

Anything else, write to hello@bylauren.co and Lauren will reply herself.

Which product should I start with?+

Crushed Pearl Butter is the gentlest way in. It has no DMSO and works for most skin. If you want the full face ritual, add Cleanse + Body Oil in the evening and BioLume 2.0 at night.

What is DMSO, and is it right for my skin?+

DMSO is a plant-derived sulphur compound that moves easily through skin and carries the botanicals with it. It's used in considered amounts in BioLume and the body elixirs. Because it carries whatever is on your skin, apply DMSO products only to clean skin, never over makeup, perfume or other products. Patch test on your inner arm first.

Why might I notice a faint scent when I apply BioLume?+

That's DMSO. Some people notice a faint, oyster-like scent on the skin as it goes on. It's natural and fades within minutes.

I've had injectables. When can I use BioLume?+

Wait until your last treatment has fully settled, and avoid areas with recent injectables. If you're unsure, check with the practitioner who treated you.

Can I use the range while pregnant or breastfeeding?+

Products with DMSO aren't recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Crushed Pearl Butter and Cleanse + Body Oil contain no DMSO; if you have any doubt, ask your midwife or doctor first.

How long does a bottle or jar last?+

Around five weeks with daily use for BioLume and Crushed Pearl Butter. Every formula is water-free, so a little goes a long way. Store below 24°C, away from direct sunlight.

When will my order arrive?+

Shipping within New Zealand is free on every ritual set and on orders over $150; otherwise it's a flat $13. Each order is made in small batches in Mangawhai Heads: allow 5–7 business days to make and dispatch, then 2–3 business days for delivery.

Do you ship internationally?+

Yes, on request. Get in touch before ordering and we'll confirm shipping to your country.

Can I return a product?+

Because every product is handmade and for skin, we can't accept returns of opened products. If something arrives damaged or isn't right, contact us within 7 days and we'll make it right.

The ingredient glossary

Every ingredient earns its place

I'm a realist. I've spent years and money on products that didn't absorb and didn't tell the truth about what was inside them. So every formula here is anhydrous: no water, no fillers, no bulking agents. Every ingredient is in the bottle because of what it does, not to make the label look good.

Ageing gracefully isn't about fighting your skin. It's about knowing it and feeding it. Your skin is not a problem to be solved.

Pearl: The Original Beauty Ritual

For thousands of years, pearl has been treasured by empresses, healers and herbalists. Here's why it still earns its place in a modern ritual.

The origin of luminosity

Deep underwater. Warm, dark and endless.

A grain of sand. An irritation. The oyster begins to wrap it, layer after layer, nacre over nacre. Mineral and protein and light fold in on themselves, over and over, until the wound is no longer a wound. Luminous. Whole. Pearl.

The ocean takes what does not belong and makes it the most beautiful thing it has ever produced. There has always been a teaching in that.

The lineage

For thousands of years, across cultures that never spoke the same language, people arrived at the same knowing: pearl is precious, and pearl belongs on the skin.

Sumeria. A queen buried with pearls pressed into her hands. Legend held that pearls were the tears the gods wept into the sea.

Egypt. The scent of frankincense. Cleopatra lifts a single pearl worth a province, drops it into wine and drinks it. Pure sovereignty.

China. The Tang court. Wu Zetian, the only woman ever to rule China as emperor in her own name, sits at her mirror while her attendant grinds saltwater pearl into a fine, luminous powder. Zhēn zhū, the treasure of the deep, pressed into her skin every morning. Her ritual.

India. Here pearl belongs to the Moon, Chandra: intuition, receptivity, the rhythm of the feminine.

Japan. Ice water. The Ama women freedive for pearls with only breath and body, trusting the ocean to return them safely.

Different worlds. The same pearl.

What it carries

Pearl is mostly calcium carbonate, bound together by conchiolin, the protein that gives a pearl its lustre. Alongside it sit amino acids and more than thirty trace minerals, including magnesium, zinc and selenium.

The Ming-dynasty herbal Bencao Gangmu recorded it plainly: pearl applied to the face makes the skin moist and the complexion fair. The empresses knew it long before anyone wrote it down.

In tradition

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, pearl is considered cooling and calming, and luminous skin was understood as the outward expression of inner harmony. Beauty was never separate from wellbeing.

In Ayurveda, pearl is a cooling element for those who run hot. Both traditions have long seen it as a symbol of vitality and the life force expressed.

What you'll notice

On skin, crushed pearl gives a soft, light-reflecting glow: the original radiance, not manufactured shine. It leaves a silky finish that sits beautifully alone or under makeup.

The ritual

Pearl holds the energy of the divine feminine. It is, by nature, slow. Made over years inside a living creature, in the dark, without hurry. The kind of beauty that comes not from a single application but from the devotion of returning to it.

Which is why it belongs in the morning ritual. Not as an afterthought, but as the anchor to your day, in harmony with the sun.

A lineage of empresses and pearl women, in a jar.

Made with love,
Lauren

Journal · DMSO

The Power of DMSO

Skin, penetration and precision: what dimethyl sulfoxide is, why it demands respect, and why it's at the heart of BioLume.

A substance that asks for discernment

DMSO, dimethyl sulfoxide, refuses to sit neatly in a single category. It is not a folk remedy, and it is not simply a laboratory chemical. It has been studied, restricted, praised, set aside and rediscovered for decades.

What DMSO is

DMSO is a sulphur compound drawn from lignin, the natural material that binds wood fibres. Its defining quality is rare: it moves through skin with remarkable ease, and it carries what is dissolved in it along with it.

Its history

DMSO entered research in the mid-twentieth century and has been used ever since in laboratories, in cell and tissue preservation, and in veterinary care. Its path has been uneven: tightly controlled in some places, quietly available in others. Not banned, not embraced, not simple.

It is plant-derived, inexpensive and can't be patented, which is part of why the big beauty houses have had little reason to build around it.

Why it demands respect

What makes DMSO powerful is also what makes it demanding. It doesn't choose what it carries. Anything on the skin, from fragrance and residue to household cleaners, can travel with it.

The question is never DMSO alone. It's what it brings along with it.

That's why formulation, purity and clean skin matter so much, and why casual, internet-led experimenting is where problems begin.

Why I use it in my skincare

Understanding DMSO changed the way I think about skin. Skin is not a decorative surface. It is a living, responsive organ, and what we place on it matters more than most of us realise.

Every formula is built with that in mind. Ingredients are chosen for compatibility, simplicity and integrity: clean, organic wherever possible, and of the highest quality I can find. I work through the frameworks of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda to keep each formula in harmony.

When an ingredient helps everything else travel further, the bar for everything else rises. DMSO asks for precision and restraint, and it shows.

How to use it with care

  • Apply only to clean, dry skin, never over makeup, perfume or other products.
  • Less is more.
  • It hasn't been adequately studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so please don't use it then.
  • Avoid areas with recent injectables or topical medicines, as it may carry them deeper.

DMSO isn't here to convince, convert or promise. It's a reminder that skin is intelligent, that absorption is real, and that potency without care is rarely kind. Working with it asks for patience and devotion to the body as an ecosystem.

I'm proud of the work behind these formulations, and always grateful for the messages from those who have felt the difference.

Made with love,
Lauren
